Rangers’ Tortorella Fined $20,000 For Pittsburgh Postgame Rant

NEW YORK (WFAN) — Rangers head coach John Tortorella was fined $20,000 from the NHL on Friday for his postgame comments after New York’s loss to the Penguins on Thursday.

The fourth-year coach was furious after center Derek Stepan was injured following a hit from Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik. Following the game he called the Penguins the most arrogant team in the league, and accused both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin of being whiners.

Earlier in the season, Tortorella was fined $30,000 for criticizing the officiating at the Winter Classic in Philadelphia.

The Rangers are 51-23 on the season and have clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Did you love Tortorella’s comments, or do you think he should have kept his mouth shut ahead of the playoffs? Sound off with your comments below…

They can fine Torts all they want….what he sais is absolutely true the Penguins are a bunch of BABIES….God forbid we should even look at precious Crosby and they start crying…….Thats OK when all said and done……the cream always rises to the top…..

This was a smart move. It was just a slightly more profane version of something Phil Jackson would have said.

hell yea tort……you tell em…. even tho they wont admit it, its true……every word he said is true …..we’ll see those pricks in the playoffs!!!!!!

I hate the Rangers but I actually have to disagree with what the NHL has done here. Orpik was clearly going to be beat by Stepan and he made a gutless/desperate action… And the NHL does baby Crosby and the team that surrounds him.

Torts gets fined 20k, and oprick, nothing for injuring stepan. I love the NHL at tude toward unnecessary violance

The NHL is a gutless league. Bettman obviously went to a different commissioner’s school than Roger Goodell.

  • Jose

Everything he said was true. You can’t get near the NHL’s “princess” Crosby without being called for a penalty. The truth hurts and the NHL knows it.
