World’s Largest Rooftop Farm To Be Built In Sunset Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The world’s largest rooftop farm is coming to Brooklyn.

The company Bright Farms said it’s building the farm in Sunset Park on a former Navy warehouse.

CEO Paul Lightfoot said the farm will be able to grow a million pounds of produce each year including tomatoes, lettuce and herbs.

“We’re building a future in which local farmers still shop side by side with customers and grow produce for them by hand with loving care,” Lightfoot said. “That future begins here right now with this project in Brooklyn.”

The company said the project will also prevent two million gallons of storm water from flowing into local waterways.

As a local resident, I am VERY excited about this, assuming local residents will have access to that produce. If this is a hunts point market situation where local residents don’t have access to the produce, then I’m lukewarm at best.
