NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Police officers responding to a report of a man with a firearm inside of an East 96th Street building arrived to find a gruesome scene.

On Saturday afternoon Vincent Tropeano, 74, and Elain Tropeano, 63, were found dead inside of a first floor bedroom with gunshot wounds to their heads.

The pair was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Neighbors told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten that Tropeano's wife was in terrible pain from Multiple Sclerosis. They said that Vincent had devoted his entire life to Elaine but that they could see that he was at a tipping point.

" I kept trying to say to him, just get away from the house for awhile," said neighbor Lou Drucker.
