NYPD, FDNY Get Ready To Face Off In Annual Hockey Game

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York City Police Department and Fire Department will face off Saturday at Nassau Coliseum for the 39th Annual "Battle of the Badges" hockey game.

The fire department has won the last three years and Police Officer Chet Wakie, an anti-crime officer in Queens, told 1010 WINS he's hoping to turn that around this year.

"Last year we lost with 22 seconds in overtime but this year we got a couple of new guys on the team – younger guys, faster – so hopefully we come out on top," Wakie said.

Many of the team members played hockey in college and Wakie said some were even drafted in the NHL and played some minor league games.

There's a lot of hitting and a lot of fights in the game but Wakie said at the end of the day it's all for a good cause.

"Our main goal for the PBA hockey team is to honor the spirit of those members of the service who were killed in the line of duty and to help ease the financial burdens of the families," Wakie said.

Tickets are $20 and the game benefits various causes including the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Funds.
