New Fleet Of Green Taxis Set To Hit The Outer Boroughs In June

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The yellow cab is as much a New York tradition as the Yankees or visiting the Empire State Building. But this new fleet of taxis that will hit the streets in June in the outer boroughs will be the color green.

This bold move is part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's green initiative. The first wave of apple-green taxis will appear in northern Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island.

One man told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck that he doesn't really care.

"I'm sorry, I'm the wrong person to ask," David Abrams explained. "I'm colorblind, so I can't even tell the difference. I probably won't be able to tell the difference between a green one and a yellow one. As long as there's enough leg room in the back, I don't care."

But one livery driver told WCBS 880's Monica Miller that it will be nice to finally be considered legitimate. She believes it will bring outside-borough taxis into the fold.

"This is just great," the driver told Miller. "It's like history for us."

Bloomberg said that the color green was a no-brainer.

"The Big Apple was long ago used to define New York," Bloomberg said. "Green apples taste great, and I think the color does exactly that. Apple green is attractive and distinctive. It is easy on the eyes and easy to pick out from a distance in traffic."
