NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with a crime spree outside the Prudential Center on Saturday, according to police.

About 10 to 15 teens attacked five people near Broad and Market streets after a Red Hot Chili Peppers show, police said. At least one of the victims was seriously injured and police said victims’ cell phones were also stolen.

“I think that the taking of the cell phones was secondary. I think the main focus on it was to assault them,” Police Director Samuel DeMaio said Wednesday. “It seems like it was done just for fun.”

The suspects, two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old, were taken to the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with rioting, aggravated assault, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, police said.

But DeMaio called the arrests “a bitter/sweet accomplishment.”

“I am alarmed that our youth who should either be at home under a parent’s supervision or engaged in some type of productive or recreational activity, are instead roaming our streets creating mayhem through senseless and random acts of violence,” DeMaio said in a statement.

More arrests are possible.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Newark police arrested three more juveniles who allegedly assaulted a man at Ferry and Christie streets and attempted to steal his cell phone.

The man was able to fight off the suspects and police said he later pointed them out in a lineup.
