Jets Legend Joe Namath: 'No Doubt,' Sanchez Better Than Tebow

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Joe Namath is all about the "San-chise."

The Jets legend made it clear Tuesday night that he favors Mark Sanchez to be the starting quarterback for his old team over Tim Tebow.

Appearing at the United Way's Gridiron Gala charity function in Manhattan, Namath said "there's no doubt at all" about who is the better quarterback.

"Mark knows he's a better quarterback, and bring on the competition." said Namath. "Mark is sensational. He's going to be much better."

The Jets traded with Denver to bring in Tebow to back up — some think challenge — Sanchez for the first-string job. Namath, who led the franchise to its only NFL title in the 1969 Super Bowl, added he is a fan of both quarterbacks and that Tebow can help the Jets.

Namath also drew a comparison between himself and Sanchez, recalling how he won the Super Bowl in his fourth pro season.

"(Sanchez is) going into his fourth year," said Namath. "Golly, I remember a team that won a championship with a quarterback in his fourth year. Let's hope that happens again."

Namath, no stranger to publicly criticizing his former team, also touched on his shaky relationship with Jets owner Woody Johnson.

"There's an underlying sensitivity there that the Jets have," he said. "I don't like feeling the vibes that I get back whenever I cross Woody's path."
