Police Search For Driver In Deadly Hit-And-Run In Bay Ridge

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who they say mowed down a man in Brooklyn on Monday night.

Just before 9 p.m., 33-year-old Amjad Barakat was crossing against the light at 72nd Street and Seventh Avenue in Bay Ridge when the car, described as a tan or beige Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis, hit him and kept going, police said.

Responding officers found Barakat unconscious and unresponsive with severe head trauma, police said.

Barakat was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family is calling for justice.

"Whoever did this is an animal," Barakat's distraught sister, Almaza, said. "He just left him like a dog on the street."

Barakat was born and raised in Michigan but frequently flew to Jerusalem where he has two young daughters.

The investigation is ongoing.
