Air Force Veteran In NYC For Fleet Week Shot And Killed

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --  An Air Force veteran from Florida who was in New York City for Fleet Week was shot and killed while walking with his cousin in Parkchester.

It happened early Saturday morning in front of a building on Lyvere Street.

Fabian Gonzalez, 21, was out with his cousin and his cousin's friend when witnesses said the friend got into a fight with the suspect, who police identified as 18-year-old Jordan Agosto.

That's when police said Gonzalez was shot in the chest and his cousin in the leg. Both were taken to the hospital where Gonzalez died.

Family members said Gonzalez, a proud Air Force veteran who left military service to study nursing, was eager to tour the Intrepid and join in Fleet Week activities.

"Never in my wildest dreams I would think Fabian would die at the hands of an individual on a sidewalk," his aunt Felicita Saldana Wilson told CBS 2's Dave Carlin. "We worried about him going in to Afghanistan at the time when he graduated."

Gonzalez was staying with his grandfather, Roberto Gonzalez, who said earlier in the night, he urged him not to go outside.

"Stay in the room, don't go out," he said. "But they went out. They went out."

Police arrested Agosto on murder and other charges.

"I always told my son to be careful because I was born and raised here and I left when I was 16 because I know what the streets do to you," said Gonzalez's mother Saldana Sanchez. "He is my only son, my only child. He was a good son."

Agosto is due back in court June 1.
