Seinfeld And The Schmoozer: 'Jerry From Queens' Talks Mets Magic On WFAN

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- It has become an annual rite of spring-slash-summer: comedian Jerry Seinfeld and WFAN host Steve Somers, two peas in a pod, talking Mets baseball.

Only there was something different about this year's chat. Johan Santana's no-no and the Amazin's' surprising play had "Jerry from Queens" gushing right through the telephone.

Seinfeld, on a flight from South Bend, Indiana, and unaware of the history unfolding Friday night at Citi Field, wasn't fortunate enough to sweat out every inning with his fellow Mets fans. But like the Flushing faithful who couldn't quite believe their eyes, Seinfeld was dumbstruck by the news he received on the ground.

"I was told by the driver that the Mets just had their first no-hitter," he told Somers on Monday night. "And I just dropped my bags right there at the curb and went, 'No!' "

With the Subway Series right around the corner, Seinfeld made it clear he was happy to have endured the years of pain that often come with root, root, rooting for the Mets.

As the saying goes, without the bitter, the sweet ain't as sweet.

"This is the Yankee curse," Seinfeld said. "When you're a Yankee fan, you can't have a thrill like this. It takes 50 years to make a thrill like this. If the Mets had three no-hitters, just think of what we would be missing, what we would have missed out on.

"That's what we call 'Mets Magic.' They have this thing where they can thrill you in the most unexpected ways, and I really do think there's something special about this organization. It's why I love 'em."

Manager Terry Collins' squad may have Somers dreaming of October baseball, but Seinfeld wasn't about to go there.

"Forget about 'October' or 'serious,' now we have a summer!" said the funnyman. "They just gave us an entire summer of interest and enthusiasm and ups and downs, which is what we love about baseball."
