NEW YORK (CBS News) – Food critics are sinking their teeth into a scathing restaurant review of Food Network star Guy Fieri’s high-profile restaurant in New York City’s Times Square.
Fieri, the host of “Diners, Drive Ins and Dives,” is one of the most recognizable chefs on TV and recently opened his eighth restaurant, “Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar,” in New York. The New York Times food critic, Pete Wells, gave the new eatery zero stars. He called Fieri’s food “poor” and posed pointed questions to Fieri in his review, including:
“Were you struck by how very far from awesome the Awesome Pretzel Chicken Tenders are?”
“Did you try that blue drink…any idea why it tastes like some combination of radiator fluid and formaldehyde?”
The review went viral, with many in the food world piling on, but Top Chef winner Michael Voltaggio told CBS News’ Chris Evans it could actually be good for business. “I think in this case, it’s probably going to help, because I’m curious now.”
On Yelp, most customers seem to fall in line with the critics’ take, but for his part, Fieri told CBS News, “You can’t have eight restaurants and be doing it wrong, or that wrong…”
