Knicks’ Felton: Am I Better Than Lin? Yeah, Jeremy And Every Other Point Guard
NEW YORK (WFAN) — Raymond Felton knows how much excitement Jeremy Lin brought to the Tri-State area last season, and he wishes the point guard the best of luck leading his new franchise.
Some have panned the Knicks’ decision not to match Houston’s big-money offer sheet for Lin. But Felton, back in New York, doesn’t seem to think fans at Madison Square Garden will miss Linsanity.
“I’m a competitor. Do I think I’m better? Of course I’m going to say that,” Felton said during MSG’s broadcast of the Knicks’ summer league loss Thursday. “I think I’m better than any point guard. That’s the way I’m supposed to think.
“But at the same time, there’s nothing personal between me and Jeremy. I know everybody’s going to try to make it that way, and if it’ll be that way, then so be it. I’ll be ready for the challenge. I’ll be better then.”
Felton, shipped out in February 2011 to Denver as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade, admitted he entered Portland Trail Blazers training camp overweight and out of shape prior to last season.
His numbers took a dive as he averaged only 11.4 points and 6.5 assists in 2011-12. Let’s just say Felton is ready to quiet his critics.
“I’m the first one to say I wasn’t in shape,” Felton said. “I don’t make no excuses, I don’t blame nobody else. But you know, that’s all I’m hearing from everybody, you know, that ‘Oh, he wasn’t in shape last year.’ I played in the league seven years, about to be eight, came in out of shape one year and that’s all everybody wants to talk about.”
He added: “(In) this game and at this level, you’ve got to take the good with the bad. So that’s all everybody wants to talk about. I look forward this to this year, to shutting up everybody’s mouth.”
