NEW YORK (WFAN) – Since Alex Rodriguez will be out of the Yankees line up for six to eight weeks, Brian Cashman will need someone to fill his role. The Yankees have recalled infielder Ramario Pena from Triple-A for the time being, but The New York Post reports that Cashman will explore other third baseman options.
“I think we will get Alex back,” Cashman said. “Nevertheless, I will go through the motions (of finding out what is available). It will all come down to price tags. My initial thought is that we will do nothing. But a week ago I didn’t think we would get Ichiro and we did that. We will see what is available and what the cost is and move from there.”
The Bombers will now have to play with Rodriguez, Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner out of the lineup.
The Yankees will most likely use Eric Chavez at third against right handed pitchers, and Jayson Nix against left handers. Eduardo Nunez has been rehabbing a thumb injury and has played a week’s worth of games since coming off the DL, but he is still working his way back at High-A. The Yankees could also call up Triple-A third baseman Brandon Laird.
If Cashman is looking to propose another trade, Chase Headley from San Diego might be the best option. However, it would force the Yankees to give up more prospects at a time when they are trying to protect their farm system. The organizational mandate is to be under the $189 million luxury tax threshold in 2014.
“I think pricetag will be the only issue,” Cashman said. “If something makes sense, we will do it.”
