Cromartie: I'm Jets' Second-Best Receiver; Rex 'On Top' Of Potential Drama

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Antonio Cromartie is widely regarded as the Jets' second-best cornerback behind Darrelle Revis.

Guess what? He thinks he's good enough for a No. 2 ranking on the other side of the ball, too.

Cromartie said on Tuesday that, outside of Santonio Holmes, he's New York's best weapon at wide receiver.

"I think I'd put myself as second," Cromartie told ESPN. "I haven't really played it in the past four or five years, but I can put myself as the second just with raw ability and talent going out there, I think, me separating and being a more physical guy out there on the outside."

Cromartie has taken just one snap so far at wide receiver during training camp in Cortland. Coach Rex Ryan has said Cromartie may get some looks at the position, and the 28-year-old revealed to the New York Daily News that the Jets are ""trying to make up a 'Cro Package'" on offense.

No offense to Jeremy Kerley, rookie Stephen Hill or even tight end Dustin Keller, one of quarterback Mark Sanchez's favorite targets. Cromartie just has a strong belief in his skill set.

"Kerley is a more of a slot receiver. He's a slot guy," said Cromartie. "Stephen Hill, he's a younger guy that can get down the field. I think, for me, I can run every single route in the route tree. I'm not going to take away from my ability. So when you ask me that question, yes, I'm going sit here and say that I'm one of the best receivers on the football team, next to Santonio Holmes."

At Jets camp on Wednesday, receiver Chaz Schilens said he felt slighted by Cromartie's comments.

"I'll let him think whatever he wants," Schilens said. "I think he thinks receiver is a little different from what it actually is. He's unbelievably talented and he plays cornerback."

Ryan, who promised to be more hands-on this season, didn't sound too happy either.

"I'm going to say this right now," he said. "Listen to me when I tell you this: I'm aware of what was said. I'm on top of it. I'm telling you that right now and it will not be a problem. That's all I'm going to say about the whole thing."
