Newark Liberty International Airport Sees Two Security Scares Just Hours Apart

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - There was a security scare -- times two -- on Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Terminal C was on lockdown for about an hour-and-a-half after a passenger left a checkpoint without proper security screening.

A source told WCBS 880 reporter Steve Scott that a woman managed to pass through a TSA security checkpoint after setting off an explosive detection machine. Six flights departed the terminal before it could be shut down.

The result of the breach was flight delays and re-screening for all departing passengers. After an extensive search, it was determined that the woman left Newark for a flight to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, according to the TSA. The woman is not a threat, according to sources, but it remains unclear why she set off the detection machine.

The lockdown was lifted at approximately noon, and officials confirmed that there will be delays until 1:30 p.m.

And that wasn't all that took place this morning, as an oversized bag triggered an alarm.

It hadn't been properly cleared, and it was found while on its way to a United Airlines plane for loading. The bag was re-screened and properly cleared.

A complete nightmare for passengers. Have you had similar experiences at airports? Sound off with your stories and comments below...
