First-Ever Suffolk County Boaters' Sobriety Checkpoint Leads To Two Arrests

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Suffolk County police held their first-ever Boating While Intoxicated sobriety checkpoint, leading to the arrests of two people.

The checkpoint, conducted by the Marine Bureau and Highway Patrol Bureau, was near Sandspit Marina in Patchogue.

Ann Marie O'Toole, 55, of Holbrook and Michael Bacher, 49, of Patchogue were charged with BWI during the stops.

The first-ever BWI checkpoint was meant to enforce the law and to promote boating safety, Suffolk County Police said.

A total of 23 boats went through the checkpoint.

In a separate incident, Lindenhurst man Frank Vogt, 56, was arrested for BWI and his boat was seized by officials because of a prior DWI conviction.

The three people arrested for BWI will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.
