Columbia University Freshman Dies In Plunge From Dorm

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Columbia University freshman has died on the first day of orientation.

Martha Corey-Ochoa, who was the valedictorian of her class at Dobbs Ferry High School, was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital after she was found on West 114th Street and Amsterdam Avenue late Monday.

1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reports

The 18-year-old either fell or jumped from a 14th floor window of John Jay Hall, officials said.

The medical examiner’s office will determine whether the death was a suicide or an accident.

Corey-Ochoa, who lived alone, had a history of psychological problems and was on medication, sources told 1010 WINS.

Dean of Student Affairs Kevin Shollenberger said in an email that Corey-Ochoa  was “passionate about mathematics and literature, and recognized as a very talented writer.”

Grief counselors will be at the school to help students cope with the tragedy.
