Kips Bay Residents Say Plan For Revamped Sanitation Garage Stinks

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Kips Bay residents are in an uproar over a pending plan to replace a nursing school with a  sanitation garage.

Under the plan, the Hunter College-Bellevue School of Nursing on 1st Avenue and 25th Street would be converted into a city garage for garbage trucks, snow plows and street sweepers.

Residents told CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez that if the center is built, it will cause an influx of undesirable elements in their neighborhood.

"It will just bring traffic, congestion, noise, pollutions, germs. All bad, bad stuff," Elena Nadolny said Monday night.

Neighbors expressed concern over the potential for foul odor and vermin infestation.

"Definitely going to be a lot of smell and rats and other stuff. And it's not going to be a really good area," Mahima Gupta said.

The garage would sit in the middle of a stretch of East Side hospitals and medical and dental schools.

The plan still has to pass through the Uniform Land Use Review, where the public can voice their concerns, but some residents said they believe their input will not matter.

Community Board 6 Chair Mark Thompson said that he would be working with the city to address concerns that residents may have over the proposal.

"We will work closely with the Department of Sanitation and the city to address every issue now and throughout the permitting process," he said.

An existing garage on the Upper East Side would be converted into a cancer treatment facility and nursing school for Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

The city said the partnership will enhance medical care and create hundreds of job.
