NYPD: Arrest Made In Case Of Woman's Body Inside Plastic Bin

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police made an arrest Wednesday night in the gruesome killing of a 34-year-old woman in the Bronx.

Police charged 16-year-old Darwin Jackson with second-degree murder, among other charges, in the killing of his mother, Tihesha Savage, whose body was found stuffed in a plastic container with trauma to the back of her head.

Officers had been questioning Jackson earlier, but announced the arrest around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Family members of the dead woman, including a cousin, were distraught but had little to say about the shocking find that was made on Macombs Road near Jerome Avenue. At around 9 a.m., a building porter discovered the woman's body in the bin, covered with a sheet.

"When he saw a head, he thought it was a dog," worker Rafael Artuan told CBS 2's John Slattery.

Neighbors said they knew Savage, who lived across the street on the sixth floor of 1447 Macombs, for years. She had been living with two children -- a teenage boy and a younger girl.

"She was a beautiful person. She loved her kids. She was a good mother, a good wife. Her husband got incarcerated," neighbor Evelyn Reyes said.

Prior to the arrest, the family seemed to not have a clue as to what could've been behind the peculiar killing.

Neighbor Sandra Carrion said there were never any fights, drama or arguments, adding when asked if she knew of anyone who could be responsible for the woman's death, "That's what we want to figure out, who's the psycho. He's terrible, whoever did this to her."
