NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -Police are looking for a man who allegedly broke into a home and climbed into bed with a 3-year-old girl.

Detectives canvassed a block of 88th Avenue in Queens for witnesses who might have seen a man running away at around 1:20 a.m.

A man woke up and reported a break-in. When he went to check on his 3-year-old daughter, he found a man who he described as drunk in bed with the child, police said.

The father said he chased the intruder, who got away.

EMS told 1010 WINS that it responded to the scene of a sexual assault. Sources told 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa there were no visible signs of trauma to the child.

Initial reports said the child, who was taken to Jamaica Hospital, had been fondled, CBS 2’s John Slattery reported.

“This is unbelievable,” neighbor Molly Grazette told Slattery. “This is a quiet block, nothing like that happens around here.”

“I imagine the average  father would want to kill the guy,” said neighbor Aaron Clarke.

Radha Persaud lives in a home across the street that has a series of security cameras, which police were checking, Slattery reported.

Persaud said it’s not unusual for drunks and bums to be out on her street. “They drinking and lie on sidewalk, frequently, yeah, frequently, but they never bother no one,” Persaud told Slattery.

Police recovered a couple of bags of evidence from the apartment for testing. More than one neighbor said the whole thing sounds peculiar. “”I think there are missing pieces of information and it doesn’t fit together. And it seems strange to me that what they’re trying to say happened, happened, Clarke said.”

Despite any skepticism, police were going full speed ahead with the investigation, trying to locate the man.
