NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Jets owner Woody Johnson has his priorities: the upcoming presidential election and his football team.

In that order.

When asked on Monday to rank a potential winning season for the Jets against a victorious campaign for Mitt Romney, the Republican challenger’s backer was quick to pick.

“I think you always have to put country first,” Johnson said on Bloomberg’s “Market Makers.” “So I think it’s very, very important — not only for us, but for our kids and grandkids — that this election come off with Mitt Romney and (Paul) Ryan as president and vice president.”

Here’s something Jets fans will agree with: Johnson called Sunday’s brutal 34-0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers “absolutely unacceptable.”

Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez connected on less than half of his passes for the third straight game in the drubbing. That’s not to say there wasn’t plenty of blame to go around.

And that doesn’t mean Tim Tebow will start next Monday night against the undefeated Houston Texans. Head coach Rex Ryan reaffirmed on Monday that Sanchez would remain the team’s starter, something Johnson is on board with — for now.

“It’s a question that’s going to be asked more frequently if this progresses,” Johnson said. “This is unacceptable playing. We failed in all three areas: offense, defense, special teams. We let our fans down.”

When pressed about Tebow, Johnson backed No. 6.

“There’s going to be more pressure,” Johnson said of Sanchez. “This quarterback can get the job done. (He) really can. He had a bad day and the team had a bad day. It wasn’t all on Mark Sanchez.”
