ROCKVILLE CENTRE N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Long Island Rail Road riders can now get out of the elements and take cover at station waiting rooms into the evening hours.

Waiting rooms at 41 LIRR stations will now be open until 10 p.m., the railroad announced Wednesday.

"This is part of making ourselves over into a more customer-driven organization," LIRR president Helena Williams told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

The indoor waiting rooms had previously closed by 3 p.m., leaving customers exposed to the elements.

"We always expanded hours during inclement weather but now even when it's just plain cold or it's too hot," Williams told Hall. "Customers have a place if they want to sit and wait until a train arrives or if they're waiting for some other connection, somebody to come and pick them up."

Williams said she hopes riders take advantage of what she called a nice amenity for customers.

"Our goal is to make sure that the waiting room stays clean and that it doesn't become a target of vandalism," Williams told Hall.
