NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A street so legendary that a high-end department store uses its address in its name gets a high honor.
Fifth Avenue is ranked among the top 10 greatest streets in the country in a new survey from the American Planning Association.
1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reports from Fifth Avenue
“I think it’s the center of the world, it’s great,” a New Yorker told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck on Wednesday.
The legendary avenue runs from Washington Square Park all the way to the Harlem River at 142nd Street.
It’s home to such landmarks as St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Empire State Building and high-end shops like Cartier and Louis Vuitton. The flagship Apple store is also on Fifth.
“[We] designate Fifth Avenue as a great street because of its historic landmark properties, museums, parks plus the role that it plays in economic vitality,” Jeff Soule of the American Planning Association told Schuck.
Fifth Avenue is also known as Museum Mile for a stretch along Central Park.
Tourists and New Yorkers alike said the honor is deserved.
“All the stores, the beautiful shops,” a woman told Schuck.
“I’ve never seen stores like this, with the architecture and everything. One of a kind,” a visitor added.
Two other streets on the APA top 10 list are also in New York State — Wall Street in Kingston and Broadway in Saratoga Springs.
