Time-Saving Technology Tips

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- We love technology - but it can swallow up a lot of our time.

A recent survey shows the average person wastes more than eight hours a week surfing the web for news, music, cute pet pictures and tons of other stuff.

Not to mention, social media can be a real distraction.

According to Jolly, Americans spend far too much time on Facebook. Add to that Twitter, Pinterest - YouTube - mobile games like words with friends - and its easy to see why some folks can't seem to get anything done.

Her time-saving solution: Automate everything. Use an app like RescueTime, which measures all of the different things you do on your computer and gives you detailed reports based on the data.

You can also use it to schedule reminders to pop-up onscreen and even to block yourself from sites that you're tempted to visit but know you shouldn't.
