Suffolk Police Investigating Fatal Hit-And-Run Accident

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Suffolk County police are investigating an early morning fatal hit-and-run accident.

Police said a driver noticed a woman leaning against the center median on the westbound lane of Sunrise Highway near Jerome Avenue and turned back to check on her.

The driver and other motorists who stopped saw the woman laying in the left lane of the road and called 911 around 1:45 Sunday morning.

The woman, identified by police and 30-year-old Jennifer Wheeler of North Lindenhurst, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's officer.

Detectives said they believe the woman was hit by a car that fled the scene. No witnesses have come forward so far, according to police.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
