NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — You’d be hard-pressed to find a cookbook with a more personal touch than television star Valerie Bertinelli‘s One Dish At A Time.

It’s a collection of recipes featuring items near and dear to her heart.

She dropped by The Couch to talk about the book, how she balances good food with sensible eating, and a whole lot more.

“All these recipes are from my family, from my girlfriends, from my mothers-in-law, the women in my life who I just love and adore and who all served their food with love,” Bertinelli said of the book. “And I’m just trying to pass it on.”

Bertinelli, who famously shed her extra pounds with Jenny Craig, said she fell in love with her husband while cooking.

“It was at my brother’s house,” she said. “We were making the hors d’oeuvres for the evening, and we just kept glancing at each other while we’re cooking. Eight years later, here we are.”

The candid book discusses Bertinelli’s battle with weight loss, but also features some indulgent recipes.

“I don’t believe you should deny yourself anything,” she said. “If it is an indulgence, just don’t have too much of it.”
