NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Lady Gaga announced Wednesday that she has pledged $1 million to the American Red Cross for Superstorm Sandy relief efforts.
The iconic pop star announced the donation on her Little Monsters blog.
“If it wasn’t for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today,” she wrote. “New York is relentless ambition, a drive to succeed, a place where there is a natural pursuit of diversity through compassion.”
The gift was made on behalf of Lady Gaga herself, as well as her parents, Joe and Cynthia Germanotta, and her sister, Natali, “with our deepest gratitude New York for raising us.”
Several other celebrities have donated substantial funds to relief efforts for the devastating storm. E! Online reported Chelsea Handler donated $100,000 to the Red Cross on behalf of John C. Reilly, and Adam Levine made himself a “poster boy” for the organization.
Jerry Seinfeld also announced Wednesday that he will be adding a Dec. 19 show in Long Island, and will be donating the proceeds from that show – as well as two other upcoming shows in Brooklyn and Staten Island – to Sandy relief.
