Explosion Rocks Vacant Newark Building, Spreads To Nearby House

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey family was left homeless for the holidays, after their home went up in flames following an explosion nearby.

The explosion rocked a vacant residential building at 12-14 Fabyan Pl. in Newark during the 6 p.m. hour, causing a huge fire. The thick flames quickly spread into a nearby house, causing damage.

NJ.com reported the building where the explosion happened was on the brink of collapse and would likely have to be torn down.

The cause of the explosion remained under investigation Wednesday night, but authorities believed natural gas might have been to blame.
