NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) — More than three-hundred adorable cats and kittens will be up for adoption on Sunday when Whiskers in Wonderland takes the city by storm.

The event is sponsored by the Mayor’s Alliance For NYC’s Animals, in partnership with the PETCO foundation. The adoption will take place simultaneously, from noon until 5:00 P.M. at five different PETCO stores across Manhattan. Rabbits will be available for adoption at three of the locations.

There is a tremendous need for cat adoptions, cats and kittens currently account for almost 63% of the city’s animal shelter population, according to the alliance. Some of the pets up for adoption on Sunday were rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

UNION SQUARE (860 BWAY (AT 17TH STREET.)

86TH STREET & LEXINGTON AVENUE

KIPS BAY (560 SECOND AVENUE AT 30TH STREET)

92ND ST. & BROADWAY
