NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A violent crash in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon left a grandmother dead and several other people hospitalized.

Police said a maroon Acura SUV plowed through a stop sign at the intersection of West 5th Street and Quentin Road, slamming into and flipping a Jeep Cherokee.

The Acura then went up on the curb and struck four members of a family who were walking on the sidewalk, fatally hitting 60-year-old Chenugor Dao of 1663 West 5th Street in Brooklyn, police said.

The other victims on the sidewalk include Dao’s husband, her pregnant 32-year-old daughter and her 1-year-old granddaughter, according to police.

Those victims were taken to Lutheran Hospital in stable condition, according to police.

“One of them was pinned under the car and they tried to push the car to lift up a little bit to pick him up from underneath the car,” witness Hussein Hassan told CBS 2’s Dave Carlin.

Dao’s family members told CBS 2’s Carlin that they were just a block from home when the deadly accident happened.

The driver of the Acura has only been identified as a 60-year-old man. No charges have been filed and police said no criminality is suspected, though the investigation is ongoing.

The driver and three passengers from the overturned Jeep are also hospitalized. One of them is a man in his early 20’s in critical condition.

Neighbors said they see too many careless drivers on this road, calling the intersection a death trap, Carlin reported.

“Cars are driving too fast through here,” one man told Carlin.

“People either don’t stop at the stop sign, fully stop, and most likely the people going on the avenue Quentin Road usually go fast,” Hassan added.

Residents said they want to see speed bumps and warning signs posted at the intersection to prevent future incidents.
