Long Island Boy Scouts Leader Charged With Child Porn Possession

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Boy Scouts leader in Long Island has been arrested after author allegedly found hundreds of images of child pornography on his computer – some reportedly showing children as young as 5.

Edward Orenchuk III, 23, was arrested at his home in Garden City on Wednesday.

In August and September 2012, investigators from the Nassau County District Attorney's office spotted Orenchuk making several images of child pornography available for others to download, and traced the source of the images to his home on Wheeler Avenue, according to the Garden City Patch.

Police went to Orenchuk's house Wednesdsay morning, and he admitted that he had hundreds of child pornography images on his computer – some showing children as young as 5 years old, the Patch reported.

Orenchuk was scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison.

Authorities said Orenchuk is an assistant scout master for Troop 243 in Garden City and works as a page at the Garden City Public Library.

The Boy Scouts said Orenchuk was dropped from the organization once they learned of the charges. A library spokeswoman said Orenchuk has been taken off the library's work schedule.
