NYC Leaders Call For Citywide Gun Recovery Initiative
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City lawmakers and religious leaders are calling for a citywide gun recovery initiative in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. elementary school massacre.
State Sen. Adriano Espaillat, several city council members and religious leaders will announce plans to get illegal firearms off the streets at City Hall on Tuesday.
Officials will call for continuing the Toys for Guns program that was started in the 1990s and organizing gun buybacks across the five boroughs in the coming months.
Officials said the initiative would be a way for New Yorkers to do their part in remembering the 26 children and adults that were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday.
