NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Brooklyn girl is alive thanks to several good Samaritans.

Tawaiian Holmes, 9, was riding her scooter on a sidewalk in Brownsville Wednesday night when she was caught up in a three-car accident.

Police said a livery cab struck a sedan and SUV at Livonia and Rockaway avenues around 7:30 p.m. One of the vehicles jumped the curb and pinned the girl underneath.

“I knew my baby was in the direction of the car. I didn’t see her standing. I knew immediately my baby was under the car,” Tawaiian Holmes’ mother Ezara Paul told CBS 2’s Sean Hennessey.

A group of good Samaritans ran out of a nearby check-cashing business after hearing the crash and lifted the car off of the girl.

“I ran cause I saw the little girl under the car and she was just yelling, ‘Please help me, please help me’ and her mom was saying, ‘My baby, my baby,'” good Samaritan Michael Ward told 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa.

Good Samaritan Rusty Greene got emotional recalling his frustration trying to move the car off the girl.

“I couldn’t pick it up, I got on my back and tried to push it with my legs,” Greene said.

“The first time we tried to lift it we couldn’t get it up, but the second time we lifted it, we got it up and her mother slid her out,” good Samaritan Keith Anderson said.

Tawaiian suffered two broken legs and a broken pelvis. She is recovering in the hospital.

“She just wants to see her school friends and she wants to eat,” Paul said.

Five other people were injured in the crash and were taken to local area hospitals.

Police said the livery cab driver was arrested and charges are pending.
