Queens Family's Dog Rescued Just Before He Would Have Been Euthanized
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A family in Belle Harbor, Queens, was happy to report Sunday that their dog was back home alive and well, after being rescued just in time.
As CBS 2's Drew Levinson reported, Christine O'Donovan and her children could not be happier that Buster, a 1-year-old Ridgeback-Shepherd mix, was back home.
Superstorm Sandy wrecked the O'Donovans' house, and when work crews assessed the damage in Mid- November Buster was spooked and took off.
"He just ran out and disappeared," O'Donovan said.
O'Donovan said she and her children spent a month looking all over their neighborhood and beyond. But Buster was nowhere to be found.
Then late on Dec. 12, the O'Donavans' friend, Kim Frazier, was searching the Animal Care and Control Web site and spotted a picture of Buster.
She was horrified to see he was due to be euthanized in the morning at their shelter in Brooklyn.
"By this time, it was maybe 10 o'clock, 10:30 at night, and there is now no way to reach the shelter," Frazier said. "There is no direct line once they close. They close, you can't go there."
Frazier, who runs the animal rescue group Sasha's Mission, messaged the shelter over the internet to spare the dog…but she didnt know if they would see it. She texted O'Donovan to get there as soon as possible.
The following morning, O'Donovan came to the shelter, to pick up Buster. If she had not, he would have been put down.
"I cried," O'Donovan said. "I was so happy. I love my dog."
O'Donovan said she is going to do all she can to make sure Buster doesn't run away again. The name Buster may seem appropriate, as the dog busted out, but he's back home now.
Buster is really a lucky dog. O'Donovan first saved him when he was a puppy. When she found him tied to signpost beside the road and took him home.
