Red Cross And Miss New York USA Contestants Team Up To Raise Awareness About The Need For Blood Donations

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Call them 'Contestants For A Cause', on Saturday four Miss New York USA contestants teamed up with the American Red Cross to raise awareness about the need for blood.

Contestants Denisse Pascual, Damaris Canales, Alicia Henry, and Danielle Draizin spent the day at the Red Cross Greater New York City Chapter on West 49th street, hosting a blood drive.

While donations are collected throughout the year, January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month, a time when the Red Cross reaches out and thanks blood and platelet donors around the country.

"Every two seconds a patient in the United States needs blood," the Red Cross said in a press release regarding the event, volunteers are needed to help save lives. The Red Cross has been supplying life saving blood for more than fifty-years.

Donors at Saturday's event were given vouchers for tickets to an upcoming Islanders game.
