Long Island Doctor Latest To Plead Guilty In LIRR Disability Fraud
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Dr. Peter Ajemian, an orthopedist with a practice in Rockville Centre, is the latest to plead guilty to taking part in a Long Island Rail Road disability fraud scheme.
On Friday, Ajemian admitted his role in the massive conspiracy to help score of LIRR employees retire early and collect extra disability pension from the federal government.
Ajemian was responsible for nearly half of all fraudulent disability claims filed by railroad workers.
He admitted to fabricating or exaggerating medical conditions to get those claims approved. He would also order unnecessary medical tests to back up the false claims.
The doctor was facing a maximum sentence of 30 years if he had been convicted at trial. His guilty plea will get him a reduced prison sentence in the 10 year range.
His sentencing is set for May 24.
