DOT Requests Outside Seating In Be Returned To Design For New Staten Island Ferry

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The preliminary design for the new Staten Island Ferry does not include outdoor seating, and many riders can't even imagine not being able to get some fresh air.

"A ferry without outdoor seating seating? Are they out of their mind?" rider Mary Miller told WCBS 880 reporter Jim Smith.

She wants the next generation boats to keep the outdoor areas.

"The ferry, the water, the sky, the birds. If we don't have outdoor seating, we might was well just swim," she said.

Riders say it's a great tourist attraction - many just ride the ferry to Staten Island and then turn right back around and return to Manhattan - as well as nice distraction from the stress of commuting.

"Wonderful in the summer time. You get a great view," said one man.

Published reports said the city has received a preliminary design for a new ferry which eliminated the outdoor sections, but the DOT has requested the popular feature be added back.

The new ferries are still at least six years out.
