Sex Offender Arrested For Public Lewdness In L.I. Libraries, Bookstore

SELDEN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 54-year-old man was arrested in Suffolk County this weekend, after people spotted him engaged in acts of public lewdness in two libraries and a bookstore.

Angel Laporte of Selden, who is a registered sex offender in Connecticut, was arrested around 6:50 p.m. Saturday in front of his home.

At 9:50 p.m. Friday, a woman found a man – allegedly Laporte – masturbating in a Barnes and Noble bookstore at 4000 E. Jericho Turnpike in East Northport. The woman yelled and the man ran off.

Police said they later learned Laporte had also committed unspecified acts of public lewdness in the Deer Park Public Library on Jan. 5, and the Commack and West Babylon public libraries on May 7 of last year.

Laporte was also wanted by the New Milford, Conn., Police Department, for three warrants for failing to register as a sex offender.

Public records indicated that Laporte was convicted of public indecency in Connecticut in 2003. Further details of his crime were not available.

In the latest cases, Laporte was charged with four counts of public lewdness. He appeared for an arraignment Sunday at Suffolk County First District Court In Central Islip, but details of the arraignment were not available.
