Smithtown Votes To Clean Up Homeowner's Junk-Filled Property

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Smithtown officials have voted to take action against a homeowner whose junk-filled yard has been deemed a safety hazard.

Charles Richie's property at 21 Heather Drive in the quaint Kings Park community is littered with piles of scrap metal, wood, paper goods, broken electronics, tools and broken furniture.

After 30 years of complaints about the mess, the town has decided to clean up the property with or without the owner's consent.

"I'm very happy," neighbor Beatrice Swift said. "I think everybody on the street is."

"It's a garbage dump," neighbor Al Highbloom said. "It's an eyesore. Why he didn't want to clean it up, I don't know. Throw things out, you can't be a hoarder. God knows what's inside."

Town officials said Richie was issued a number of summonses over the years which he has ignored, 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported.

Richie was not available for comment.
