Police: L.I. Man Stole From 85-Year-Old Mother To Get Drugs

WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man has been accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from his elderly mother to pay for his drug addiction, Nassau County Police said.

Paul Hannwacker, 46, was arrested around 2 a.m. Sunday after he was found in an "intoxicated state" in his car that was stopped at a 45-degree angle in the middle of the road in Westbury, police said.

Hannwacker was found with narcotics and his 85-year-old mother's credit card which he allegedly used to get cash to support his drug habit, police said.

Following an investigation, police determined Hannwacker had stolen more than $100,000 in cash and jewelry from his mother over two years.

Hannwacker faces several charges including driving while intoxicated, criminal possession of a controlled substance, grand larceny, forgery, identity theft and falsifying business records.
