Police: New City Woman Stabbed Daughter Before Killing Herself

NEW CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Police are investigating a possible attempted murder-suicide in Rockland County.

Authorities said a woman, identified by Clarkstown police as Victoria Vovchik, 45, stabbed her 7-year-old daughter several times and then killed herself inside a home on Quarry Drive in New City.

Police responded shortly after 1 p.m. after the girl's father called 911 from inside the million-dollar home to report a possible suicide, according to authorities.

The father is not considered a suspect in the incident, police said.

Vovchik was found dead in the master bedroom when police arrived, according to authorities. The little girl was taken to Westchester Medical Center in critical condition.

The little girl underwent surgery and it remained unclear if her injuries are considered life-threatening, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.

"It's horrible. I just pray that the little girl will be OK," next door neighbor Sherry Rosenstein told Haskell. "It's horrible, it's sickening, it's horrible. The mother must've been in a lot of pain to even attempt something like this."

"It's a shock and a horror for everybody," neighbor Marcy Becker said.

The girl was not at school on Thursday.

Vovchik was a podiatrist in nearby Bergen County.

Police are not aware of any domestic or mental health issues, Haskell reported.

The incident remains under investigation.
