NEW LONDON, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – A gun buyback event continues Sunday in New London, Conn.

The buyback, which began on Saturday, has already netted 40 handguns, 38 long guns and an AK-47, according to police.

Police handed out $1,175 in gift cards to 47 people who turned in weapons on Saturday.

Police departments across the Tri-State have held buybacks in the months since the Newtown massacre brought the gun control debate into the forefront.

The Dec. 14 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting left 20 first graders and six educators dead.

The buyback is being held at the New London police department’s Truman Street Substation.
