Authorities: Man Wounded In Staten Island Police Shooting Has Extensive Record
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) — Shots were fired and a man was wounded during a police chase on Staten Island.
Two Detectives and a Police Officer from the Staten Island Gang Squad stopped a man driving a 2012 Toyota Camry on Manor Road, near North Gannon Avenue. As the driver attempted to flee the scene he pinned a detective in between a pair of cars and was seen reaching for a weapon, according to authorities.
One of the officers fired and hit the suspect in the torso. The wounded man kept driving before crashing into another vehicle and a utility, police said. He then attempted to flee on foot, but was eventually apprehended by the Gang Squad.
Residents speaking to 1010 WINS reporter Gary Baumgarten described an intense scene.
“A loud popping sound that I was able to hear inside the house while I was watching TV,” said Amir,”I came outside and took a look, the ambulance and the cops came.”
The wounded suspect was taken to Richmond University Medical Center. According to authorities the man has an extensive arrest record, and was in possession of a loaded .44-caliber revolver at the time of the shooting.
The Detectives and the Police Officer were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
