Landlord Faces Murder Charges In Brooklyn Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn landlord is facing second-degree murder charges in connection with a deadly dispute over the weekend.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. Sunday at 566 Shepherd Avenue in East New York.

Phillip Estevez, 63, was trying to collect $100 back rent from a female tenant who had locked herself in her apartment when a neighbor tried to intervene, 1010 WINS reported.

Police said Estevez shot the neighbor, identified as 51-year-old Luis Martinez, in the chest and then tried to fire at the tenant, but the gun jammed, 1010 WINS reported.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Estevez is claiming self defense, 1010 WINS reported.
