Sweeny: Updating The Progress Of Mark Teixeira; When Will He Return?

Mark Teixeira believes that he can be playing for the Yankees again by May 1.

Just over three weeks since suffering an injury to his right wrist during workouts for the World Baseball Classic, Teixeira is with the Yankees as they head north. He has been working out, taking ground balls in the field and taking one-handed swings in the batting cage. While the possibility exists that the injury won't heal with simple rest, Teixeira is preparing as if it will, and as if he can rejoin the Yankees after missing only the first month.

Again, it's possible that Teixeira will still need surgery if rest hasn't healed the wrist properly. Surgery will then become more likely, and that could cost Teixeira the season. That's not a plan he's focusing on right now.

Lyle Overbay and Kevin Youkilis are expected to hold down first base until Teixeira can return.
