Gun Buyback Held At Suffolk County Church

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County held a gun buyback Saturday, and officials urged those in possession of illegal firearms to bring them in.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, it was about seven years ago that Suffolk County police held the county's first gun buyback, and Lt. Robert Donahue said hundreds of guns could be collected at the event in Amityville Saturday afternoon.

"What we're doing is collecting illegal handguns and assault-type weapons, not rifles and shotguns, because we know that the majority of crimes with guns are with handguns," Donahue said.

Donahue said police are collecting assault weapons in the wake of a number of tragedies, including the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn. No questions will be asked at the buyback, and police will give $300 for every assault weapon turned in, and $100 for every unregistered handgun.

The buyback was held until 3 p.m. Saturday at the Prayer Tabernacle Church of Church of God in Christ, at 3550 Great Neck Rd. in Amityville.

A separate buyback event was also held at the Christian Cultural Center In East New York, Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.

The Brooklyn buyback netted 115 weapons including ten rifles and a sawed off shotgun.
