Long Island Man Gets 30 Years For Killing Ex-Girlfriend, Her Son

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man will spend 30 years to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend and her 2-year-old son.

Jerry A. Lewis sought forgiveness at his sentencing Wednesday.

Winston Planter told Newsday he will never forgive Lewis for the 2001 death of his daughter, Shakeela.

Planter told the court his "sweet'' daughter's face was slashed beyond recognition. He identified her by a mark on her toe.

Her mother, Pamela Planter, said the Jamaican immigrant worked two jobs to save money for graduate studies.

Lewis pleaded guilty to murder in February.

He left Planter's plastic-wrapped body on her bed in her North Bay Shore home. Jaiden was beaten to death then stashed in a freezer.

Lewis' mother persuaded him to surrender in Laurel, Md.
