Schumer Calls On Feds To Reimburse L.I. Schools For Sandy-Related Travel Costs

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - New York Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on the federal government to reimburse Long Island schools district for transportation costs for students displaced by Sandy.

Schumer said more than a dozen school districts on Long Island spent more than $1 million to provide transportation to some 1,000 displaced students.

Schumer says the extra costs are eating into schools' budgets.

The senator says he'll call on the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force to find ways to reimburse the school districts. The federal task force was established in December and has provided billions of dollars in disaster aid.

By law, school districts must provide transportation to students displaced up to 50 miles by the storm.
