NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The backup quarterback who isn’t expected to remain on the Jets, but is still with the Jets, worked out Monday with a former Jets quarterback.
Yeah, we’re confused too.
Tim Tebow spent a portion of Monday working with Vinny Testaverde at Jesuit High School in Tampa, where the retired signal-caller serves as quarterbacks coach. Testaverde, still a fan favorite in New York, spent six seasons with the Jets from 1998-2003.
“He was doing a private workout with Vinny Testaverde at some point in the middle of the day,” Jesuit public relations director Pete Young told the Bright House Sports Network in Florida. “For the record, it did happen.”
Tebow is planning to attend the Jets’ voluntary workouts in Florham Park, N.J., beginning on April 15, according to multiple reports.
Despite coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik hinting they might just keep Tebow around, the 25-year-old is expected to be cut loose before the season begins.
The Jets worked on improving Tebow’s mechanics last offseason. Still, he was used primarily as a punt protector on special teams. Tebow threw just eight passes in 2012, completing six for 39 yards. He added 102 yards on 32 carries and was kept out of the end zone.
New York currently has five quarterbacks on its roster: Mark Sanchez, Tebow, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.
Embattled starter Sanchez, who will compete for his job in training camp, has been working this offseason with former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia.
