NEW YORK (WLNY) – Entertainment icon Marilu Henner has not only made a name for herself as an actress, but also as a best selling author.
She’s also one of only 12 people in the world documented with Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory, known as H-SAM, the recently discovered phenomenon — the ability to recall nearly every day of one’s life.
Henner recalls every moment of her life.
Now she’s using her gift to help others.
“Memory is tied to adrenaline..so the highs and lows of ones life are always going to be there,” she said. “I’m trying help people not only cope with and deal with those memories by really exploring them, but by bringing
“I encourage people to remember, because you don’t want something to become this emotional boogeyman,” she said.
In other words, don’t let a bad memory control you.
“Anything you’ve ever done is on your emotional hard drive anyway, so why not use the information from your past, bring it to your present and elt it inform a better future?”
According to Henner, it’s easier than people think.
“Everyone has a primary track on which they’ve embedded their memories,” Henner said. “Everyone remembers something especially well. Whether its sports, relationships, travel, school, jobs you’ve had, places you’ve lived – everything.”
“Every person has a dominant sense,” she said. “Everyone is like a sight, sound, touch, taste or smell person. When you cross connect these two things, you can start bringing these memories back.”
“To me, developing a strong autobiographical memories is our strongest defense against meaninglessness that we have. It’s also a tremendous insurance policy against loss.”
